Project underway to end Garissa water shortage, says County Gov’t

Garissa Governor Ali Korane has assured county residents that the government is addressing the water shortage menace in the region.

In a statement issued Monday, County Executive Committee member for Water Issa Oyow said construction of a 300,000-litre capacity booster station tank to supply water to Tawakal, Mzuri, and Rahma areas among others is ongoing.

“We are fully aware of the situation in some areas of Garissa County and we are working round the clock to have them get piped water among other adjacent locations,” said the Water CEC.

“For the last 12 months, we have improved our coverage in Garissa township from paltry 25% to 85%. We have drilled and connected 6 of the planned 14 boreholes in Garissa Township with the ultimate aim of doubling of production 30,000 cubic metres per day.”

The county government further noted that it is drilling eight more boreholes to address the water crisis.

“The 8 new boreholes once completed together with the 6 already operational boreholes (3 in ADC & 3 in Prison/ Iftin) will bring the total number of boreholes drilled by the County Government in Garissa town to 14 as promised by the Governor.”

Earlier on Monday, county residents in Rahma area had raises concern lamenting over water shortage.
