Protesters begin to assemble in parts of Nairobi

A number of protesters being bundled into a police car in CBD

A number of protestors have started streaming into Nairobi's CBD ahead of Azimio la Umoja's mass action expected to be witnessed in the better part of the day, on Monday 20.

Around City Hall, a handful of protesters were seen holding sufurias shouting pro-Raila Odinga chants. The same was experienced outside the Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC) and other streets within CBD.

A number of protesters were however arrested shortly after and whisked away by police, according to videos seen by Citizen Digital.

In Kibra, protesters began assembling in groups early Monday morning.

Police officers lobbed teargas to disperse the group, which had started pelting stones at the officers.

At the CBD, police and civilians are engaged in running battles, and teargas was lobbed at KICC.

Azimio's top-ranking leaders led by Odinga are still a no-show.

Odinga’s demonstrations, which he maintains will be peaceful, are part of his plan to pressure the government to lower the cost of living, among addressing its other concerns.

Winnie Odinga, Odinga's daughter has also said that she will be joining the demonstrations.
