Basic Education Principal Secretary Prof. Julius Bitok has ordered schools across the Gusii region to readmit more than 200 teenage mothers without conditions, saying they deserve another chance at education.

Speaking on Friday at Sungubo Grounds in Bobasi, Bitok lauded Kisii County Woman Representative Dorice Donya for criss-crossing the county to ensure teenage girls return to school.

He noted that some of the girls had also been supported with business start-up capital to boost their economic growth.

"I am here to rally the 200 girls who are the teen mothers to go back to school. I want to direct all education officials here in Kisii to make sure all the 200 girls are back to school as soon as possible," said Bitok.

Leaders in attendance called for punitive punishment for perpetrators of defilement in villages, as cases continue to rise in rural areas.

"Nilikutana na hawa watoto wako na watoto na nikapata kilio yao sio kuwa na watoto, walikua na hamu ya kurudi shuleni so nikaongea na PS Bitok na akasema atakuja huku Kisii akutane na hao awapatie solution in life," Donya said.

"They are defiled in the bushes na tunasema wenye wanafanya hivyo wanastahili wafinywe."

Kangaroo courts were also cited as the greatest impediment to fighting the vice.
