The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) Party brigade led by party leader Raila Odinga on Sunday trooped to Tononoka Ground in Mombasa where they tore apart development milestones claimed by Jubilee Government.

Raila Odinga claimed that the government has orchestrated a plan to topple Mombasa City as the country’s largest imports and exports hub, saying the Jubilee Administration is planning to create a major inland port at Naivasha, fed by the new Standard Gauge Railway (SGR), to replace Mombasa Port’s business.

The opposition leader said that some government insiders have purchased a large parcel of land in Naivasha, previously owned by the famous agriculturalist Lord Delamere, ostensibly for the project.

Raila further claimed that the government is not genuinely committed to solving land issues at the coast, challenging the president to come clean on ownership of extensive chunks of land in the region.

Mombasa Governor Ali Hassan Joho echoed Odinga’s sentiments saying the government is hell bent on making the coastal region poorer.

Governor Joho urged coastal residents to choose a National Super Alliance (NASA) government, assuring them that it will give counties more freedom to take charge of their resources.

Kilifi Governor Amason Kingi dared the government to continue troubling his Mombasa counterpart, saying the entire opposition team will stand by the governor.

“Joho has been a staunch member of ODM and we will stand with him in his troubles with the government,” said Kingi.

He added that the government is misusing coastal region coordinator Nelson Marwa and the police to frustrate the outspoken Mombasa governor – Joho.
