Raila to commission 3.6KM bridge in Juba, set to ease trade links in East Africa
Azimio la Umoja presidential flagbearer Raila Odinga is in
South Sudan to commission a 3.6 km Bridge that will connect Juba to the rest of
the East Africa region, on Thursday, May 19.
Odinga, who is the High
Representative for Infrastructure Development in Africa for African Union (AU),
arrived in Juba on Wednesday.
He was received by Kenya
Ambassador to South Sudan Major General Samuel Nandwa and Roads Minister Simon
Mijak Mijok.
Odinga, upon his arrival in the young country, tweeted:
"Africa is busy expanding its infrastructure."
The bridge is expected to ease transport systems in the
country’s capital as Juba’s old bridge has been enfeebled. It will also address
the limited passage of heavy trucks importing goods from other East African
countries.
The construction of the
bridge begun in 2013, but stalled immediately following the outbreak of war in
the capital Juba that forced most foreign workers to flee the world’s youngest
nation.
