Azimio leader Raila Odinga while speaking during the presentation of the assessment of the first year performance of the Kenya Kwanza Regime by Azimio Economic Council on Saturday said the government had failed to implement the ambitious campaign promises it made to Kenyans.
The Opposition leader gave a score of 30 per cent (D minus) to the current regime.
“Kuna ahadi ambazo walitoa wakifanya campaign. Hio Lugha imebadilika baada ya wao kushika hatamu ya utawala,” he said. “Our scorecard for this regime is 30%, that is D-.”
Raila went ahead to warn that Kenyans will participate in a different kind of maandamano going forward.
He said, “Kama mnavyojua tumekua tunakusanya masahihi, kutoka kwa wakeya. Sahii tumesanya imeshafika milioni kumi na zaidi sasa imetosha gari na tumejua kile ambacho tutafanya na hizo sahii,” he stated.
“Mara hii haitakua ati sisi tunaambia wananchi warudi kwa Barbara, hapana wananchi wakirudi watarudi kwa mambo mengine tofauti kabisa.”
“Sitaki kusema wakati huu maanake nitakua mimi nimetoa maneno mapema. Watch this space!”
This loosely translates to, "As you know, we have collected 10 million signatures from Kenyans... we know what we will do with those signatures.
"This time we are not telling the citizens to return to the streets. If they return, they will come back for completely different reasons. Watch this space!”
Raila faulted the Kenya Kwanza regime for interfering with devolved functions and misuse of state organs as he hinted at a different kind of anti-governement protests.
“Wamechukua wabunge wa ODM, unaona jinsi wanavyoongea ,wanasifu serikali na kusema watafnaya kazi Pamoja “
Though the coalition acknowledged the fact that there was a global economic recession, the leaders demanded that the government offer solutions to Kenyans instead of lamenting.
Conversations on the state of economics, education, health, devolution, legal and governance, gender the youth and housing, were among those presented by the committee.
Azimio Deputy Chief Agent Dr Caroline Karugu echoed Odinga’s words, adding that the regime had made many promises to the women and youth yet none had been kept.
“If there are people that have been hoodwinked by this regime, it is the women of this country. Everything from the pre-election promises of how many women will be in cabinet to how women will have access to markets,” she said.
“There is a 200% increase in primary health care prices across the country. If you go to the dispensary near you, what you were paying 50 shillings to access today is about 200 shillings to access.”
