The Rural Electrification and Renewable Energy Corporation (REREC) has launched an electrification project in Kirundi village, located in the backyard of Deputy President Prof. Kithure Kindiki, bringing hope to a community that has been in darkness for years.

While flagging off electrification materials in the village, Energy Cabinet Secretary Opiyo Wandayi said it was time for Tharaka Nithi County to feel like other parts of the country, following what he termed as years of neglect.

"The President loves you so much. He sent me greetings and asked me to thank you for giving him a calm Deputy who is dedicated to his work," said CS Wandayi.

Energy Principal Secretary Alex Wachira stated that the Kenya Kwanza government has already connected about one million and fifty households to electricity since taking office. He added that the government plans to connect approximately 3,000 families to electricity in Tharaka Nithi County during this financial year.

He noted that the Kirundi project will be completed within the next three months.

The PS urged residents to continue supporting the government, saying the President has expressed his confidence in the people of Tharaka Nithi by also appointing Betsy Muthoni, from Tharaka Nithi County, as the Principal Secretary for the Blue Economy.

Also present at the function were area MP George Muraguri and REREC CEO Dr. Rose Mkalama.

The team later proceeded to Kaliwa village in Mwingi North Constituency for another electrification material flag-off event. A total of 350 residents from the area are also set to benefit from electricity connectivity.
