Riots as Machakos University students protest death of student shot by 'stray bullet'

Machakos University students have gone on the rampage after a student who was reportedly shot by a stray bullet during protests on Monday died on Wednesday while receiving medical care at the Machakos Level 5 hospital.

The protests forced businesses along the busy Machakos-Wote Road to close down and ground transportation to a halt.

Several photos obtained by Citizen.digital also showed a heavy anti-riot police presence as the riots spread to Machakos town.

At the same time, a police officer who was part of the contingent sent to restore order is said to be in critical condition at Machakos Level 5 Hospital after being beaten up by rioting students.

At the heart of the growing unease is what students have described as growing insecurity, following the death of a student who was attacked by thugs on his way home and died at the Kenyatta National Hospital.

Another student was reportedly shot in the stomach by a stray bullet while protesting in Machakos on Monday.

Police Corporal Michael Mulwa, the officer who discharged the weapon, is already in police custody following the Monday incident.

Two other police officers were also arrested after allegedly stopping a Machakos University student, beating him up, and stealing his phone.

"His roommate however managed to escape the attack narrowly and took flight screaming, attracting neighbours who also happened to be students from the university," DCI said in a statement on Monday.

Students within the premises then responded to the distressing calls and rescued the accosted student.

Attempts to flee by the two cops turned futile after handing back the stolen phone as officers from the Machakos police station had already arrived and arrested them.

The two will remain under police custody at the Machakos police station awaiting arraignment.
