President William Ruto has commissioned the Shuublow electrification project in Wajir East constituency, Wajir County.

The project, which was implemented by the Rural Electrification and Renewable Energy Corporation (REREC), connects 91 households to electricity, as well as Shuublow Mixed Secondary School and a mosque.

Speaking on Wednesday in Wajir, President Ruto disclosed that his government will connect 20,000 households to electricity within the next few years at a cost of about Ksh. 3.6 billion.

REREC CEO Dr. Rose Mkalama said that the corporation is in the process of expanding access to electricity, especially in rural areas, through the World Bank-funded Kenya Off-grid Solar Access Project (KOSAP).

Dr. Mkalama alluded that REREC, in collaboration with Kenya Power, will construct 120 mini-grids, which will be solar-powered, to increase access to electricity in 14 off-grid counties.

Wajir is one of the counties that will benefit from the 150 million US Dollar program. The project will be launched later this month.
