Sacked Kenyatta University VC Prof. Wainaina's message to management and students

Former Kenyatta University Vice Chancellor Prof. Paul Wainaina has asked the institution's management to remain calm and wait for the court to adjudicate on the land row pitting the university against the government.

Prof. Wainanina, who was sacked from his position following a dispute over the piece of land adjacent to Kenyatta University Teaching, Research and Referral Hospital, says he hopes the land will be restored back to the university.

The university don made the sentiments as part of his goodwill message to all students graduating from the institution on Friday, July 22, 2022.

"To the KU Management at all levels, please stay focused on serving our students. The land and University Council matter is now before the courts, and like we did before, we shall follow the Law.

We are also hopeful that the September 2021 recommendation by the National Assembly Select Committee to restore the ownership of Kenyatta University Teaching, Research and Referral Hospital back to KU for the benefit of our medical students for whom it was initially built, will be carried out," said Prof. Wainaina.

In his goodwill message to the students, Prof. Wainaina said: "To the students graduating with Certificates, Diplomas, Undergraduate Degrees, Masters and Doctorates, congratulations for the work well done. Your parents and guardians sacrificed to support many of you financially and spiritually, and you are now reaping the reward. Dear parents, we thank you for the sacrifice."

He also commended President Uhuru Kenyatta's sister Dr. Kristina Kenyatta-Pratt on being awarded an honorary degree for her commitment and service to persons living with disabilities.

Last week, the High court issued orders barring any sub-division or interference with ownership of the Kenyatta University land that has been at the centre of a spat between the institution's management and State House.

Environment and Land Court judge Oscar Angote issued the orders on Friday pending the hearing and determination of a petition filed by the Law Society of Kenya against the National Land Commission, Lands CS and six others.

In the case, LSK says that Kenyatta University is facing the imminent threat of being deprived its land measuring 490 acres.

The matter has been scheduled for inter partes hearing on July 25, 2022.

Earlier Prof. Wainaina disclosed that the push to remove him from office was triggered by his reluctance to cede the title deed of Kenyatta University land to the Ministry of Health.
