Schools facing crisis following delay in disbursement of funds – KNUT

The Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) is warning school programs may soon grind to a halt owing to delayed disbursement of Free Primary Education and Free Secondary Education funds for this year.

KNUT Secretary General Wilson Sossion complained that the funds from the government make it impossible for school heads and principals to serve students.

Sossion intimated that public schools are having a hard time financing its tuition supplies and other activities during the ongoing first term of school, including drama festivals and ball games, as the Education Ministry is yet to release the cash.

In a letter addressed to Education CS Fred Matiang’i, the KNUT boss accused Matiang’i of failing to honor his commitment to disburse the funds during the holidays before schools re-opened for the new term.

The union is now giving the Education Ministry seven days to release the funds to avert a crisis, and also ensure they are disbursed to schools on time to allow boards to procure goods and services for students.

Last year Treasury had allocated Ksh14.1 billion for free primary education, Ksh32.7 billion for free day secondary education and a further Ksh420 million allocated to special schools.
