Sell weak livestock, pastoralists advised

Pastoralists in Narok County have been urged to sell their livestock in order to minimize losses that could be incurred by the animals dying during this dry spell.

Drought Management Officer for Transmara Region Ann Seenoi Saranta emphasized the need for farmers in Narok to take early precautions to offset losses that are usually incurred whenever there is water shortage in the region.

“We might receive rains in November but it will be for a very short period and they will not be well distributed,” she said.

Ms Saranta added that the months of January, February and March would be the hardest hit by drought, and urged pastoralists not to sell food in their reserves.

“I want to encourage you to sell the cows that look weak now, don’t wait till it is too late. But don’t sell food that you have stored, especially beans and maize, if you have no reserves then I urge you to buy food now when it is still affordable,” she advised.
