The Senate has scheduled a three-day special sitting next week to hear the impeachment case against Kericho Governor Erick Kipkoech Mutai.

In a Gazette Notice published Thursday, Senate Speaker Amason  Kingi announced that the sittings will run from Wednesday, August 27, to Friday, August 29, 2025, beginning at 9:00 a.m. each day at the Senate Chamber, Main Parliament Buildings in Nairobi.

The sessions will be dedicated exclusively to the impeachment proceedings, with no other business on the agenda.

Governor Mutai faces removal under Section 33(3) of the County Governments Act after the Kericho County Assembly overwhelmingly voted to impeach him, with 33 out of 47 MCAs supporting the motion.

He stands accused of abuse of office, illegal and irregular appointments, and the dismissal of senior county officials.

Efforts to have the matter referred to an 11-member special committee collapsed after Senate Majority Leader Aaron Cheruiyot’s motion to that effect failed for lack of a seconder.

Minority Leader Stewart Madzayo declined to back the proposal, while Deputy Speaker Kathuri Murungi’s suggestion of an alternative mechanism was ruled out by Speaker Kingi, who directed that the trial proceed in plenary.

This is the second time in less than a year that Governor Mutai faces an impeachment attempt, having survived a similar ouster bid in October 2024.
