Senate to convene special sitting to discuss Sonko impeachment

The Senate has convened a special sitting slated for Wednesday whose agenda will be to discuss Governor Mike Sonko’s looming impeachment.

The Senate Majority Chief Whip  Irungu Kangata on Sunday said he had secured enough signatures to convene the sitting, saying the process will be free and fair.

In the meantime, Governor Sonko has made it clear that he intends to move to court on Monday to challenge his looming ouster, challenging its legality.

Senator Kangata who was tasked with collecting the signatures said all was set for the sitting on Wednesday- having collected at least 15 signatures.

There are already two camps pitted against each other on the impeachment: the pro-handshake team accusing the Governor of undermining his boss-President Kenyatta and the Nairobi Metropolitan Services.

The second group comprising Ruto allies has rallied their support for the embattled Governor, saying he is a casualty of standing against the system.

Elsewhere, Sonko has maintained that his ouster was illegal, explaining that the quorum was not met during the virtual voting.

He claims that the system was compromised, allowing for impersonation of MCAs to vote for his ouster.

The City chief is keen on having a plenary hearing at the Senate instead of a committee hearing saying the latter may be infiltrated by ‘powerful forces’ to seal his fate.
