Senate to debate Gachagua impeachment Wednesday

The Senate will convene a special sitting Wednesday, September 7 to debate the impeachment of Nyeri Governor Nderitu Gachagua by Members of the County Assembly (MCAs) Friday last week.

The MCAs have accused the governor of gross misconduct and abuse of office as well as violating the Public Finance Management Act.

This comes even as the Council of Governors (COG)  on Monday moved to court to challenge the impeachment of Gachagua by members of the Nyeri County Assembly.

“The law is very clear in terms of impeachment and the move by the Nyeri County Assembly is null and void and against the law,” said Meru Governor Peter Munya, who is also the Council of Governors chairman.

Gachagua was impeached on Friday following a majority vote by the MCAs.

32 MCAs voted in favour of the motion against 12 who were absent during the voting time after they walked out of the chambers.

The motion mover, Kiganjo Mathari Ward MCA, Baragu Mutahi, accused Gachagua of abuse of office and gross misconduct, declining to sign a Ksh 6.4 billion budget, corruption in the County government and embezzlement of funds among others.
