Trans Nzoia County Senator Allan Chesang has pleaded with President William Ruto to address the impending demolitions in the county to avoid displacing thousands of county residents.

In a statement to newsrooms on Friday, Chesang urged Ruto to reconsider the eviction process and opt for an alternative solution to avert further predicaments even as the government seeks to use the land for its affordable housing scheme.

The land, officially owned by Kitale Prisons, was sold to the current occupants through third parties and were oblivious to the fact that the parcel was owned by the State.

Chesang further noted that the residents who are over 100,000, risk losing their businesses and livelihoods, which they have depended on for eons.

“The affected residents are willing and ready to engage with relevant ministries to seek a mutually beneficial resolution,” said the legislator.

“The demolition of properties, currently valued in billions, poses a potential crisis and displacement for our people. Alternative government lands are available for development.”

While maintaining that he supports the ambitious goal of providing affordable homes to Kenyans, Chesang noted that the government can consider using alternative land to erect the project.

“I implore His Excellency to revisit this directive, to come to the ground, and to listen to the genuine concerns of the affected population,” he said.

Currently, according to the Senator, army officers have been deployed to the area and have already started marking beacons.
