Seventeen needy and bright students who
completed their 2023 Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) exams
will now be able to further their studies after benefiting from the Education
Endowment Program run by the Karen Nyamu Foundation.
The students who hail from informal
settlements within Nairobi County including Mathare, Kibra, Korogocho, Kiambiú,
Mukuru kwa Njenga, and Dandora slums among others will have the opportunity to
enjoy a four-year full scholarships after joining their dream schools across
the country.
The program will cater for their uniforms,
shopping, and admission to their respective secondary schools and the
foundation is expected to spend at least Ksh.1.5 million every academic year
for the next four years.
The 17 students have seen the foundation and
its partners spend over Ksh.2 million for their uniforms, shopping, and
admission as they kick off their secondary education.
Addressing the beneficiaries at the Senate
buildings, the foundation’s patron, Nominated Senator Karen Nyamu, expressed confidence
in the potential of the minors urging them to pursue excellence.
“I’m very happy for allowing me to impact
your lives; from today, even if you have parents, it’s as if I’m your adoptive
parent who will mentor you,” Nyamu said.
“I wanted to expose you to this (Senate)
setup so that it can impact you differently; you cannot be the same as another
student who has not been here…now you can dream to be here or better.”
She underscored her commitment to ensure the
learners realize their academic dreams saying she would walk with them
throughout their four years in secondary school.
“I wanted to reach out to that student whose
dream could not come to pass without such an opportunity, Congratulations for
your scholarship and for excelling in your studies,” Nyamu said on the mission
of the foundation.
“Our journey with you has just started. I
will be visiting you so that I know your progress and where we can improve. We
are in this together.”
The initiative, which has in the last two
years revived the hopes of many children in slum dwellings, has also been
financing several youth to gain skills such as hairdressing, plumbing and other
technical courses in different colleges within the county.
