Senegal President Bassirou Faye has urged Africans to embrace the culture of honouring their heroes to restore their history.

Speaking during the 2025 Mashujaa Day celebrations in Kitui on Monday, President Faye asserted that African nations should develop synergy in their efforts to celebrate their heroes and teach their history.

He therefore gave a list of steps he believes Africa should observe to protect its origins and gains made to achieve liberation.

"Build monuments and museums in honour of our heroes to serve as urban spaces of reverence and remembrance," Faye noted.

"Build documentation and reserve centres to keep records and testimonies and narratives about our heroes while supporting education on this history of great African resistance fighters against colonialism."

Faye also maintained that more streets and buildings should be named after heroes who played pivotal roles in fighting for the rights and freedoms of the people.

He further maintained that Africa's history should be taught in Kenya's curriculum, "thus the future generation will grow up with the understanding of these episodes of our past."

"Initiate days dedicated to our heroes like the one we are celebrating today. This will sustain the memories of our heroes

Mashujaa Day, formerly known as Kenyatta Day, was renamed after the 2010 Constitution to celebrate all national heroes, not just the founding fathers.
