Shakahola massacre: Death toll at 384 as 12 more bodies exhumed

A total of 12 bodies were on Thursday recovered at Shakahola Forest in Kilifi County bringing the official death toll to 384.

Police have been exhuming the site of the mass graves where followers of self-proclaimed preacher Paul Mackenzie were buried after allegedly being convinced to starve themselves to death by the extremist preacher.  

Coast Regional Commissioner Rhoda Onyancha confirmed that no new arrests have been made in connection with the deaths, thus the total number of arrests remains the same at 37.

The number of rescued persons stands at 95 while 253 DNA samples have been collected by forensics detectives.

The exhumations will resume tomorrow.
