Sheria Mtaani withdraws case challenging police recruitment

The case, filed earlier this month, questioned the recruitment's fairness and legality.

Sheria Mtaani's lawyers, Danstan Omari and Shadrack Wambui, told the court that thousands of youths across the country had pinned their hopes on joining the police service. The organisation received over 20,000 calls and messages urging intervention. 

Petitioners argued that many young people had already spent limited resources travelling to recruitment centres, and that halting the process would derail their dreams.

During Tuesday's court session, the petitioners informed the court that they wanted to withdraw the case entirely.

 They cited the urgent need to fill gaps in the police service, especially as the country moves toward the 2027 general elections.

The court heard that the number of police officers had decreased due to retirements and officers being deployed on international assignments such as the Haiti mission.

Lawyer Paul Mjamodi, representing the Inspector General, told the court that he had no objections to the withdrawal.

All other parties expressed no opposition.

As a result, Justice Mugambi allowed the petition to be withdrawn, bringing the case against the recruitment exercise to an end.

"I find no reason to deny the application for withdrawal, the matter is hereby withdrawn with no orders as costs," ruled  justice Lawrence Mugambi
