Residents of Karima village in Mwea, Kirinyaga County were shocked after a human body was discovered by two children who were swimming in river Kanaro, within the Mwea irrigation rice farm.

The body of a 36-year-old man was discovered by the two children who were swimming in the river. The children ran to inform people who were selling hay along the Mwea-Embu highway. The businessmen informed Thiba police officers and Thiba location chief who responded immediately.

According to Thiba location Chief Maina Kamenya, the man identified as James Mugo Gichobi went missing on Thursday night and the family had been looking for him.

“Detectives from Kiamaciri police station have launched an investigation, because as I have seen he had no injuries,” Kamenya said.

Shocked relatives and residents of Karima and Nguka villages led by Murage Ngige said Mugo went missing on Thursday night when there was heavy rain in the area.

“Though the family suspects he was killed, I suspect the deceased was drowned by the raging Kanaro river because this is not the first incident. But let's wait for an investigation from police,” Murage said.

The body was taken to Kerugoya hospital mortuary awaiting postmortem.
