Fresh footage has emerged showing how an American national with Kenyan roots died following an altercation with seven sheriff deputies and three medical staff at Virginia's Central State Hospital on March 6, 2023.

In the silent video seen by Citizen Digital,  the shackled Irvo Otieno can be seen being marshalled into the Virginia Hospital's mental health admission area by the Henrico County jail sheriff deputies at around 4:19 pm U.S. time.

According to CNN, Otieno, 28, was arrested on March 3 on suspicion of burglary before being taken to the county jail where he was booked.

Three days later, Otieno was then transferred to the mental health facility after allegedly assaulting three officers.

At around 4:26 pm two sheriff deputies proceed to hold down Otieno, who had been beckoned to sit on a chair, for reasons that cannot be clearly established from the video.

A few moments later, more deputies and hospital staff join in and pile up on Otieno after he seemingly attempts to shrug off the first two deputies.

Other medical personnel are captured looking on without intervening.

Otieno was held down for about eleven more minutes before he became unresponsive. The medical staff attempted to resuscitate him for the better part of an hour but their efforts proved futile as Otieno died at the scene.

A post-mortem conducted on the deceased later revealed that he died from asphyxiation.

“My son was treated like a dog, worse than a dog,” Otieno’s mother, Caroline Ouko, said after viewing the video last week.

“I saw it with my own eyes.”

The seven sheriff deputies and three medical staff have since been charged with second-degree murder but more charges and arrests could follow in the coming weeks according to the prosecution.
