Siaya, Bondo to outlaw use of pit latrines

Siaya County is seeking to outlaw the use of pit latrines within the next three months.

According to the Siaya CEC member for Water and Environment Adrian Ouma, they are working on a programme that will discourage the practice.

He said a sewerage network has been established in the two urban areas and all buildings and rental places must be connected to the sewer line.

The CEC was speaking during an environmental conservation forum in Bondo town on Thursday.

He noted that pit latrines have affected the regions’ ground water reservoirs and the proposed plan will ensure total sewerage connection in urban areas.

Eng. Adrian urged residents and landlords in Siaya and Bondo towns to adhere to the directive.

A Ksh 2.1billion water and sanitation project spearheaded by the African Development Bank (ADB) in partnership with the national government has also been completed.

The project through the Lake Victoria South Water Services Board is expected to boost current efforts by Siaya County Government to improve sanitation in the region.
