Siaya County moves to empower women

The County Government of Siaya has embarked on a programme to enhance women’s livelihoods through poultry production.

According to West Sakwa Ward MCA John Ombewa Gare, the county government allocated funds towards the purchase of chicks that are being distributed to women groups.

Speaking to Citizen Digital, Mr Gare said the programme’s objective is to enhance the incomes of women with a view of making them independent.

Mr Ombewa who spoke while distributing over 750 chicks to various women groups at Maranda and Kapiyo chief’s camps encouraged them to take good care of the chicks, stating that there is good market for poultry products in the region.

The MCA stated that they could take advantage of the increasing population in Bondo constituency to supply chicken and eggs especially to learning institutions and hotels.

He challenged them to ensure they tap the market to block such institutions from importing poultry products such as eggs, which he said have always been sourced from Uganda.

Mr Ombewa further disclosed that in next financial year, they are planning to procure hatcheries that will also be stationed at every location to boost the women groups’ capacity of producing chicks.
