Six Lake Victoria counties to receive Ksh. 7.4B  for ecological restoration

Six counties in the Lake Victoria region will receive 7.4 billion shillings by the end of the week to facilitate the restoration of ecological zones destroyed by climate change. 

Speaking in Kisumu on Monday, Treasury CS Prof. Njuguna Ndung’u indicated that the funds are part of a $297 million grant issued under the FLOCCA programme to support locally led climate resilient projects.

 The CS further reiterated on the need to invest in mitigation of the effects of climate change in order to cushion the country's economy which heavily relies on natural resources. 

On her part, Environment CS Sopian Tuya commended the commitment by the council of governors to set aside 1.5% of their annual development budgets to mitigate the effects of climate change.

"I am seeking appointments from you excellency governors for us to agree on an eco system even agree to model tree nurseries with fruit trees and fodder trees that will go a long way in addressing the food security needs and the livelihood needs of the communities we are talking about so that we stage the stage with FLOCCA and when the KEWASI funds come we build on that and scale up."Soipan Tuya, CS, Environment, Climate Change and Forestry said. 

Elsewhere, Prof. Njuguna Ndung’u,  the  Cabinet Secretary, National Treasury and Economic Planning, state said the engagement underscores the unwavering commitment of the government of Kenya to combat the effects of climate change. 

"Today’s engagement underscores the unwavering commitment of the government of Kenya to combat the effects of climate change and reverse these damaging effects of climate change through the implementation of an enabling policy in partnership with the government of Germany we are intensifying financial support at the local level." he said.
