Six people were rescued on Wednesday morning after floods rocked homesteads in Kitengela, Kajado County following a heavy downpour.

In a 7 a.m. update, the Kenya Red Cross said it was still searching for more people in the Deliverance Road, Balozi Road, Baraka Road, Blessed Court, New Valley, Changombe, and KAG areas.

The rescue operation began around 4 a.m.

Footage released by the humanitarian organisation showed homesteads submerged in floods, rescue teams wading into the compounds as others rode in boats to access the heavily flooded estates.

“Efforts to reach others in this challenging operation continue,” the Red Cross said.

Floods have wreaked havoc in many parts of Kenya amid heavy rainfall which is predicted to go on into June.

More than 170 people have died so far, over 102 others injured and property of unquantified value destroyed.

At least 30,099 households have been displaced by the floods, per government figures released on Monday, affecting approximately 150,495 people.

In the meantime, the Director General of the Kenya Meteorological Department, David Gikungu, has warned of exceptionally heavy rainfall on Thursday and Friday of this week.

Dr Gikungu told Citizen TV's The Explainer program on Tuesday night that the heavy rain would continue to fall in various parts of the country, but would be especially heavy around the weekend.
