Skipper Achieng confident of Starlets Afwcon chances
Harambee Starlets skipper Wendy Achieng says they have all it takes to qualify for the 2018 African Women Cup of Nation finals to be staged in Ghana.
The Starlets were pooled against neighbours Cresten Cranes of Uganda in the first round of the qualifiers.
The Starlets will be aiming to make a return to the continental championship finals after a debut appearance in Yaounde, Cameroon, last year.
“I am very sure that we will qualify for the tournament. We have the chance and what we need is to fight hard,” Achieng said, adding that, “Uganda is a very tough team, we have played with them a couple of times last year and they are really good. They haven’t had competitive matches since the last year’s CECAFA women tournament that was held in their country.”
The Starlets, buoyed by their impressive performances are seen as the firm favourites in the two leg clash, but being the game of football, they cannot underrate their neighbours.
Wendy, at the same time lifted the lid on their missed goals at the recently concluded Council of South Africa Football (COSAFA) tournament which was held in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe, where Starlets finished fourth, failing to clinch the trophy.
“COSAFA was a good tournament, we really learnt from our mistakes and I think it was because many players were not used to the new coach Richard Kanyi, but with time we adopt to his methods,” she concluded.
