Sonko: Nobody will stop me from vying for the Mombasa top seat
Former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko on Friday hit
the campaign trail in Mombasa as he seeks to succeed Mombasa Governor Ali
Hassan Joho.
Sonko, who was accompanied by Wiper party
leader Kalonzo Musyoka, drummed support for himself saying he was the best
candidate to address the challenges facing Mombasa.
The Wiper party team toured Jomvu and Changamwe
constituencies rallying support for Mike Sonko's governorship bid.
“Mwenyezi Mungu
ametuleta hii Mombasa, mimi na deputy governor Ali Mbogo, kuja kuwakomboa…Mombasa
mnateseka, Mombasa mnadhulumiwa,” said Sonko.
Kalonzo said the Wiper party is the most
preferred in the port city, telling critics that Sonko is a resident of Mombasa.
He stated: “Natangaza
Mombasa ni ngome ya Wiper…Wiper ilikuwa na one MCA, sasa tutachukua wote…kwa
sababu wengine wameanza kusema yule Sonko ameingia, ugavana umeenda, wacha
tutafute viti vya MCA ndio akiingia tumfanyie impeachment…haitawezekana!”
The entry of Sonko has opened a political
duel, with ODM leaders including Governor Ali Hassan Joho promising a bruising
contest for the seat.
They have criticised the Wiper party move to
endorse Sonko, drumming up support for their
candidate Mvita MP Abdulswamad Shariff Nassir.
Together with his running mate Ali Mbogo, the
current Kisauni MP, Sonko said he will focus on creation of jobs for the youth
and women empowerment, deal with the drainage and garbage menace, and the shortage
of water and insecurity.
“Tumeamua tutaweka
pesa milioni mia tano kusaidia vijana na kina mama kuinua biashara zao, ili
kumaliza Ukali Kwanza na Ukali Wao,” said Mbogo.
Sonko said: “Serikali
yangu na naibu gavana within 100 days wale vijana hawana kazi tutaleta mswada pale
bunge ya kaunti tutenge pesa kando na tuwape vijana na kina mama wabadilishe
maisha zao.”
Sonko will face ODM’s Abdulswamad Shariff
Nassir and former Mombasa Senator Hassan Omar who is vying on a UDA party ticket
among other candidates.
