Sonko: Oshwal Centre to be demolished and given land elsewhere

Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko has indicated that the ongoing demolition is only gaining steam warning that over 4000 buildings in the county have been marked for demolition.

Sonko mentioned that the Oshwal Centre is set to have a date with the excavators telling the media that notices have already been issued.

Speaking in Gigiri, Nairobi, at the site of a grabbed piece of land belonging to the Nairobi Fire Station, Sonko also said that properties that sit on road reserves will also be demolished.

As for the Oshwal Center, the governor said the temple will definitely be demolished but since it is a religious centre, the county will allocate land for free elsewhere.

“Hii mambo ya Mungu, staki kucheza nayo, tutawapatia sehemu nyingine wajenge, (We don’t want to play around with issues of God so we will give them another place to build),” said Sonko.

“They have already been served with notice but we allow them to remove their valuables, we don’t want to be malicious. We have plenty of county land, wajenge temple yao huko, but there, it has to be removed.”

This week has seen properties worth billions of shillings reduced to rubble in Nairobi as the government moves to reclaim riparian land.

South End Mall, Ukay Mall, a Shell Petrol station and a Java restaurant have been demolished for being on riparian land with the promise of more multi-million shilling buildings will come down soon.
