The Sonko Rescue Team has been disbanded. This is the announcement by Nairobi Senator Gidion Mbuvi alias Mike Sonko who initiated the project over an year ago.
Sonko, who was speaking during the funeral service of his father Mzee Gideon Mbuvi, said that he officialy disbanded the team and donated the ambulances to the county government.
The flamboyant Senator also promised to work with Nairobi Governor Dr. Evans Kidero to ensure quality service delivery for the people of Nairobi.
The rescue team, launched over one year ago, had an entourage that included a Land Curiser, Limousine, Mercedes-Benz S-Class and a Hammer among other top of range vehicles.
The group offered ambulance services, hearse, wedding limousines, car breakdown, water tankers and security emergency services, all at no cost.
This comes months after Dr. Kidero said that all the vehicles operated by the team, were started and funded by Sonko, and had not been licensed to offer the specialized services.
The Governor had also stated that the County Government had already put in place plans to address emergency cases that the Sonko Rescue Team was addressing.
Kidero further noted that all other vehicles that had not complied with the Nairobi County Government’s requirements to offer specialized services to also would be grounded immediately.
Claims by the Governor that the Sonko Rescue Team was being funded by drugs business is also a question as to whether it could have anything to do with the team being disbanded.
The two seem to have had wrangles that never seemed to end since the team was formed to a point Sonko sued Kidero for defamation.
“Any services given must be given within the confines and provisions of the law,” Kidero stated in reference to a drove of ‘charity’ activities undertaken by the Nairobi Senator through his Sonko Rescue Team.
Slightly over two months ago, a group of the team accused the Nairobi Senator of using them to advance his agenda.
The youth touched their uniforms and dumped the equipment at their disposal in a dumpsite in Nairobi’s informal settlement of Mathare.
