Sossion: Budget not our concern, teachers will not work for free

Kenya Nation Union of Teachers (Knut) Secretary General Wilson Sossion has welcomed the courts decision to award teachers a Sh52 billion salary increase saying teachers will not work for free.

Speaking to Hussein Mohammed on the Big Question show on Citizen TV, Sossion said that those who want to challenge the move should consider it a done deal.

He said that Kaimenyi was not speaking for the government when he protested the move saying that there wasn’t enough money to pay the teachers when he appeared before the parliamentary committee on education.

Sossion asserted that even though the budget had already been read, it didn’t stop the government from carrying out some processes.

“The government’s budgetary process is not our concern,” he said.

The secretary general further claimed that the perception of a huge wage bill is the construction of certain people, adding that teachers will not work for free.

He stated that the order came from the courts thus is has to be followed.

“Do we respect the courts? Do we respect the rule of law?” he posed.

Sossion charged that corruption is a greater burden to the country, far worse than the Sh52 billion increase teachers are set to receive.

He said that the country could afford to pay teachers more if the economy and funds were better managed.
