Speaker Lusaka asks Legal Affairs Committee to spearhead Electoral Reforms

Senate Speaker Kenneth Lusaka has challenged the Senate Committee on Justice, Legal Affairs and Human Rights to spearhead electoral reforms in the country.

Speaking at the Committee’s induction workshop in Malindi, Speaker Lusaka noted that the prolonged electioneering period was occasioned by poor electoral management.

“Together with the other legal institutions such as the Kenya Law Reform Commission, the Law Society of Kenya, this committee can initiate far-reaching reforms especially on the electoral management sector whose demands have polarized the country and set it on an acrimonious trajectory,” said the Speaker.

“Could this moment that comes after the recent famous handshake, not be an opportune time to relook afresh at our Constitution?” Speaker Lusaka posed.

He added that the Committee stands at a vantage position and should be at the forefront in assisting the country decipher the myriad of proposals that will predictably be advanced, given the past experiences, and ultimately crystallize viable options.

Present at the workshop were Supreme Court Judge, Hon Jackton B. Ojwang; Chairperson, Senate Committee on Legal Affairs, Samson Cherarkey (Nandi); Chairperson, Legal Committee of the Council of Governors, Gov (Prof). Kivutha Kibwana, Sen Mithika Linturi (Meru), Sen Mutula Kilonzo Jr (Makueni) and Sen Mohammed Faki (Mombasa).
