Matiang'i to accountants: Stop 'cooking books' & help us fight graft

To aid in the fight against corruption, Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang'i has asked public accountants to refrain from falsifying account books.

CS Matiangi said accountants have an obligation to help end corruption and should be at the forefront of ensuring resources are properly managed during the 39th Institute of Certified Public Accountants of Kenya (ICPAK) Annual Seminar in Mombasa.

"The problem that we face in county government is caused by accountants, the people cooking books, and they are the ones causing problems," stated Matiang'i

"Resources are being deployed in an unallowable manner and the people doing that are professionals, so the first role you can play in the effective delivery of public service is by ensuring that the law is followed and manage the resources entrusted with us."

CS Matiang'i has called for a collaboration between ICPAK and the government to mobilize proper management of public resources, which he believes will help in the fight against corruption.

"I plead for institutional partnerships between yourselves and agencies of government so that as we move forward we understand that every decision we make must be done in a strategic manner," Matiang'i stated.

"We will not preserve, protect and prudently use public resources if we do not stand up and fight corruption in public service."

Matiang'i described the 3-P approach as a coherent model for aligning Kenyans on the road to recovery, and ICPAK should be at the forefront of the solution marshals.

"For us to rally walk the path of recovery and to ensure resilience, we must espouse a 3-P-approach Preservation, Protection and Prudent management of public resources," he said.

"It's time to have an honest conversation on how we will move our country, we have a problem in the country that needs to be solved and we are wither part of the problem or part of the solution."
