Three suspects who are believed to be behind a motorcycle theft syndicate operating between Kenya and Tanzania have been apprehended.

According to a statement from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), the trio has been stealing motorcycles from bodaboda operators in different parts of the country before ferrying them to Oloiktoktok town where they are sneaked across the border.

The first person detained was one Agnes Wambui, who was allegedly using tablets to render boda boda riders unconscious.

"Posing as a pillion passenger, Wambui stupefies her victims along the way before disappearing with the motorbikes, once the nduthimen lose consciousness," read part of the statement.

Wambui provided information that led to the arrest of Daniel Mwaniki and William Nkadanyo alias Saningo after being interrogated.

"Nkadanyo was arrested in Loitoktok town where he is believed to have a ready market for the stolen motorcycles," said DCI.

A number of mobile phones were recovered from the suspects, including one believed to have been stolen from a rider in Juja, Kiambu county.

Also recovered was a set of 30 tablets believed to have been used as stupefying drugs in the motorcycle theft missions.

DCI added that a subsequent probe revealed that the suspects have pending criminal cases in Ongata Rongai, Kajiado County and in Diani, Kwale County.
