Teacher dies, several students injured after school bus rolls downhill in Chuka

One teacher from the Kianjeru Primary School has died after the school’s bus was involved in an accident on Monday. 

The driver had ‘given lift’ to other students from a nearby secondary school while on his way to pick up school-children from Chuka town when the accident occurred in the Kangoro area, according to sources.

Alex Mugambi, the head of the region’s rescue squad, said he was alerted to the accident at 5.50 a.m. on Monday.

“The driver gave a ride to several secondary school students while on his way to Chuka,” Mr Mugambi said on Monday “Ni kama gari ilisha brakes ikaanza kurudi nyuma ikabingirika hadi kwa mto,” 

The bus appeared to lose control before rolling off the road and down a slope, according to witnesses.

Several students were injured, and are being treated at Chuka General Hospital.

The driver, who had a cut on his foot, was treated and released from the hospital on Monday, along with several other students.

The body of the deceased was removed to the Chuka General Hospital mortuary shortly after.
