There was a moment of unrest at Naivasha GK prison on Wednesday evening after close to 3,000 inmates protested the death of an inmate.

The inmates, who include over 1,000 serving life and death sentences, boycotted meals before engaging prison warders in running battles inside the highly guarded institution.

They alleged that the middle-aged inmate died after he was assaulted by prison warders.

Speaking to Citizen Digital on phone, the officer in charge of the prison, Gerald Ongume, blamed the anxiety on a group of inmates who did not want to work.

The prison administration also denied allegations that the prisoner died while inside the premise. They said he died at Naivasha Sub- County hospital where he was admitted for few days.

Ongume argued that some of inmates were aiming at taking advantage of the situation to cause chaos, but his officers intervened and maintained order.

However, some inmates allege that that their fellow prisoner died from mishandling and assault by some wardens.

The inmates are said to have vowed nor to eat or report to work until the deceased gets justice.
