Text Book Centre (TBC), a leading distributor of educational, cultural and technological content in East and Central Africa, is celebrating 60 years of operation in the Kenyan market.
The company was
founded in 1964 by S V Shah and M J Rughani, who each ran bookshops in Murang’a
(formerly Fort Hall) and Nyeri, respectively. TBC opened its headquarters on
Kijabe Street in 1965, where it still operates today.
Over the years,
TBC has expanded its reach with 14 branches across Kenya and a growing
e-commerce platform. The company has also diversified its offerings to include
stationery, art and craft supplies, tech gadgets, and leisure reading material.
“As we step into
the next chapter, we recognize that the future of Text Book Centre belongs to
all of us—our loyal customers, our dedicated staff, our partner schools and
authors, and the curious minds we serve,” said Sachin Varma, TBC CEO.
In the 2023/24
financial year, the government allocated Ksh.666.08 billion to the education
sector — the highest for any ministry — reflecting a 15.61% increase in sector
spending, according to the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics (KNBS).
Academic
institutions have lauded TBC’s role in promoting reading culture. KCA
University’s Deputy Vice Chancellor, Prof. Joshua Bagaka’s, said leisure
reading and continuous skill development are critical in preparing learners for
the future.
Retail
stakeholders also praised TBC’s contribution to the sector.
“On behalf of
RETRAK, I extend our congratulations to Text Book Centre on marking 60 years of
excellence, resilience, and innovation in the retail sector,” said Wambui
Mbarire, CEO of the Retail Trade Association of Kenya.
TBC says it
remains committed to supporting learning and creativity as it looks ahead to
the future.
