Tharaka Nithi: 71-year-old man arrested after hacking son to death in row over money

A quiet night in Maruchiu Village took a grim turn as a family dispute escalated into a fatal confrontation, resulting in the death of 28-year-old Cliff Mwenda Kaburu.

According to a police report seen by Citizen.Digital, the incident, reported by Mr. Justus Mwitari, Unit Manager of Maruchiu Village, unfolded on the night of January 30, 2024, at around 10:00 p.m.

Mr. Mwitari stated that a mobile call was made to alert authorities about a murder incident in the village.

Law enforcement responded quickly, with officers from Magutuni, DCI Maara, and the Crime Scene Investigation (CSI) team arriving on the scene to assess the situation.

Upon arrival, investigators discovered there had been a fight between 71-year-old Fabiano Kaburu Eugenio and his 28-year-old son, Cliff Mwenda Kaburu.

The confrontation reportedly began with the son's violent demand for money, armed with a panga.

The situation worsened when the deceased attacked his 38-year-old brother, Maxwell Gitonga Kaburu, who had intervened in an attempt to separate father and son.

During the altercation, Maxwell sustained deep cuts to his left shoulder, chest, leg, and fingers.

In a desperate attempt to defend himself and his other son, Fabiano Kaburu Eugenio overpowered Cliff and took the panga from him.

The conflict reached a devastating climax as the father used the panga to strike his son on the head, resulting in fatal injuries.

Tharaka Nithi County's Crime Scene Investigation team processed the scene, gathering crucial evidence for the ongoing investigation.

Meanwhile, the body of Cliff Mwenda Kaburu was moved to Chuka County Referral Hospital Mortuary, where it awaits a postmortem.

The elderly man was also taken into custody shortly after the incident, which is being probed by DCI Maara.

The details surrounding the family dispute and the subsequent tragedy continue to be under investigation as the community grapples with the shocking incident.
