A group of Junior Secondary School (JSS) teacher interns in Tharaka Nithi County have demonstrated, demanding immediate confirmation on permanent and pensionable terms.

Speaking at Chuka Igamba Ng'ombe, Tharaka Nithi County, the Junior Secondary School (JSS) intern teachers demonstrated, demanding an end to their contractual employment and retention on permanent and pensionable terms.

The teachers also pushed for JSS schools to be independent and not under primary school administrators.

“Jambo la kwanza tunaomba hii serikali ni confirmation of the 20,000 JSS teachers. Mambo mingi haifanyi huko JSS; mwalimu wa science akisema anunuliwe vifaa hanunuliwi because mwenye anasimamia hajui maana,” said Patrick Gitonga

Another JSS teacher Dennis Kagwima, said, “Mwalimu wa JSS ameteseka sana. Ukienda kumwambia kusema kitu unaambiwa unajiringa uko na degree. We are saying we are demanding autonomy.”

“Autonomy is not just good for teachers but also for parents and learners. When we have autonomy in JSS, the students will have better facilities,” Martin Nyaga added.
