The One Third Gender Principle Yet To Be Realized

The recent appointment of chairpersons to Parastatals raised furor for the heavy presence of politicians rejected by voters in the last general election. But the list was also conspicuous for the few number of women with only three out of the 36 appointees or a mere eight percent. Critics point out the appointments contravene the Constitution requirement of at least 1/3 of either gender. And although the Deputy President William Ruto has promised to have more women appointed in the next round of expected appointments, it is still a long way to go for the Kenyan woman compared to other countries especially Rwanda as Evelyn Wambui reports.
