The Sisal Orphans

They trooped to the sisal farms of Taita Taveta during the 60s and 70s lured by the abundant jobs that the then thriving crop offered. The sisal farms became their adopted home but many years later, the sisal market collapsed rendering them jobless. By then, many had cut links with their ancestral homes and relatives and were too old for alternative skills and employment. Old and famished, the former workers now live in a desolate village, united by misery.  Esther Kahumbi tells us more.
