Kenyans in last-minute rush for birth certificates

It is a rush against time for parents and relatives of school-going children seeking birth certificates after a directive from the Education ministry.

The March 31 deadline essentially makes Friday the last day for parents to present birth certificates even as government offices remain closed for the Easter holiday.

Assistant registrar of persons Samuel Lukanu estimates that his office will require at least two more weeks to process the tonnes of documents presented to them.

This comes even after the ministry extended the February 20 registration deadline after it emerged that nearly 8 million children were yet to be registered.

The certificates are to be used in the ministry’s digital platform referred to as National Education Management Information System (NEMIS).

This is in line with education reforms that seek to track children’s performance and progress while also curbing cases of exam cheating.

Last month, hundreds of parents in Makueni County spent several nights on the floor outside the county headquarters as they sought to acquire their children’s birth certificates.

In Mombasa, the process also turned chaotic time at the office of the registrar of persons after hundreds of parents and learners stormed the place. Two women are said to have fainted during the incident.
