Three escape death in Murang’a accident

A driver and two other people escaped death by a whisker after the truck they were traveling in veered off the road and overturned on the busy Murang’a – Kenol road before busting into flames.

The ill fated vehicle which was believed to be ferrying tea from Githunguri Tea Factory destined for Mombasa caused a snarl up on the busy road after blocking a section of the road.

Confirming the incident, Murang’a North traffic commander, Silas Andiema, said the accident is suspected to have been caused by over speeding, making the driver unable to negotiate the corner.

The traffic boss, however, added that several people escaped with minor injuries and were rushed to Murang’a Level Four Hospital where they were treated and later discharged.

According to the Director General of the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) Francis Meja, about 1,899 people have lost their lives in road accidents between January and August this year, with 60 per cent of the deaths being those of pedestrians and boda boda riders.

Hospitals across the country have reportedly set aside certain wards to attend to boda boda riders who are victims of road accidents.

Recently, boda boda operators held prayers in Nyeri County to seek divine intervention over the road carnage in their trade.
