Three hospitalised after consuming poisonous meat

Three people from Samburu’s Sagumai village were on Monday, September 19 hospitalized after consuming poisonous meat.

According to the hospital’s Medical Superintendent, Dr Robert Nato, the hospital received nine patients who had fallen sick after eating meat from a carcass of a goat that had died on Monday after an injection.

According to the victims, the goat succumbed to an unknown disease it had been suffering from for some days.

Dr Nato said the patients, all from one family, were vomiting and complained of abdominal pain, stomachache and headache.

“We have one old man and two females admitted, the children were not badly affected, they were treated and discharged immediately,” he said.

Dr Nato said six patients, including four children, were treated and discharged in a stable condition after a few hours upon responding well to treatment.

When reached for a comment, Samburu Central OCPD, Abaggarro Guo, said a total of 15 people ate the poisonous meat but six were not affected.

Dr Nato and Guyo warned residents against consuming meat from dead animals and any form of meat that has not been inspected and approved as safe for human consumption by a public health officer.

Incidences of people falling sick upon eating meat from dead animals have been on the rise in Samburu Central Sub County as Dr Nato calls for the need for the community to be sensitised on the dangers of eating uninspected meat.

Eighteen more people including ten children were hospitalized for two days at Samburu County Referral Hospital after they fell sick upon eating meat from a goat’s carcasses.
