Three terror convicts who were re-arrested after escaping from Kamiti Maximum Prison now claim they were aided by prison officials to escape from the well guarded facility before finding their way to Kitui County.

The three are currently being held at the Anti-Terror Police Unit headquarters after the Kahawa Law Courts directed they be detained for 10 days to allow detectives complete investigations.

The three; Musharaf Abdala, Joseph Juma Odhiambo and Mohamed Ali Abikar, on Monday appeared before Principal Magistrate Boaz Ombare.

The trio however did not take plea as the prosecution side requested for more days to detain them as they continue with investigations.

Sources have intimated to Citizen TV that the three have confessed to have been aided to escape by people inside the prison facility.

The three are said to have dislodged a brick from their cell wall before scaling two high walls using ropes, ironically without even those manning the CCTV facility noticing their movement.

Sources say that after the escape, they used a private car from Kamiti to Machakos where they used a public service vehicle to move from Machakos to Kitui Town and eventually to Endau.

It is however unclear how they evaded being noticed by public despite using public means to Endau.

Detectives who have secured two phones used by the three during the escape are still searching for two vehicles, one believed to have ferried them to Machakos and the other one believed to be on standby to whisk them into Somalia.

Detectives are also questioning some of the inmates on what they know and if they heard any movements in the cells.

Meanwhile, six prison officials among them the In-Charge Kamiti Maximum Prison, Gerald Mutembei and his deputy Joseph Longorianyang, will remain in custody for the next 10 days.

The six who appeared before Principal Magistrate Boaz Ombare were denied bond as the court said that there was the likelihood of interference of witnesses at this stage of investigations.

The case will be mentioned on November 29, 2021.
