TSC announces 5000 jobs, 6000 internship slots

The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has announced it has 11,000 openings up for grabs.

Approximately 5,000 positions will be available for employment, while 6,000 will be available for internships.

The slots, according to TSC chief executive Nancy Macharia, will help the commission prepare for the Junior Secondary School in 2023.

Macharia, speaking during the release of the 2021 KCSE results at Mtihani House on Saturday, the majority of the new teachers and interns will be assigned to sub-county schools that serve a large number of students.

"During the impending recruitment, we will put more emphasis on staffing sub-county secondary schools, which admit the bulk of learners," she said.

She further said that the National Treasury has released Ksh2.5 billion for the financial year 2022/2023 which will be used to recruit more teachers on permanent and pensionable terms.

“I wish to assure the country that the Commission will immediately embark on the exercise to recruit the teachers to ensure that they report to work as soon as possible, to ease the existing teacher-shortage in schools,” Dr.Macharia said.

An additional Ksh1.2 billion has been set aside for intern recruitment to help with the country's teacher shortage.

"The government has allocated the TSC Ksh1.2 billion to recruit 6,000 interns as a stop gap measure to ease the shortage which stand at 114,581 teachers," she said.

She went on to say that a training exercise is set to begin, with 60,000 teachers set to be in charge of the upcoming junior high school classes, Grades 7 and 8, under the Competency Based Curriculum (CBC).
