Two police officers accused of killing lawyer Willie Kimani face another murder charge

High Court Judge Jessie Lessit is expected to deliver judgment against five accused persons, among them four police officers, after concluding hearings in the Willie Kimani murder trial in February.

But even before that happens, two of those accused in Kimani’s case are now facing charges in yet another murder of Peter Mutua Musyoka.

Musyoka was killed on June 2, 2016; just three weeks before lawyer Willie Kimani, his client Josephat Mwenda and taxi driver Joseph Muiruri disappeared and their bodies recovered a week later in the Ol Donyo Sabuk River.

Josephat Mwenda had complained to the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) and human rights lawyer Kimani was representing him in two cases against a police officer.

More than five years later, two of the accused police officers - Leonard Mwangi and Fredrick Leliman - are among a list of four police officers charged with the murder of Peter Mutua Musyoka.

Musyoka was murdered on June 2, 2016 at an unknown location in Machakos County.

Police officers Stephen Lelei and Wilson Kamau who were prosecution witnesses against their colleagues in the Willie Kimani murder trial are now co-accused in the fresh matter.

Fredrick Leliman is wanted in yet another murder trial alongside Stephen Lelei. The two are accused of involvement in the murder of Jacob Mbai and Elizabeth Nduku said to have occurred on May 27, 2016; just six days before the murder of Musyoka and barely four weeks before the murder of Willie Kimani and the two other men.

The new case will resume on May 24 when a mental assessment report is expected.

And even as the accused persons wait for Justice Jessie Lessit's judgment, some of them might remain behind bars for longer whichever way the court finds as they stand trial in the two recent cases.
