Two days after Citizen TV exposed
the latest gold scam that led to an American national losing Ksh.37 million,
detectives at Nyali Police Station are holding two key suspects whom they
believe are part of a gold scam syndicate that stages elaborate setups to
deceive potential buyers.
Initial
investigations reveal that the two arrived in Mombasa and hired a vehicle.
Police are piecing together the trail of the two from Nairobi to Mombasa, who
claimed they were in Mombasa to buy car.
Nyali Sub-County Police
Commander Davidson Magu said: “Walipofungua mlango wakawahoji wakasema wametoka
Nairobi wamekuja Mombasa kununua gari…after kuhojiwa pia wakaonyesha ile gari
walikuwa wanaitumia tangu wafike hapa Mombasa..gari hiyo Madza Demio.”
Detectives
later went back to an apartment in Nyali Centre along Fifth Avenue, where the
two suspects had rented two short stay apartments, to conduct further
investigations including confirming when they checked in, and details
registered. Their bags were collected as part of the evidence.
“We are connecting dots
through our investigations na tukaona kwamba hawa they are part of that gold
scam ambaye mgeni kutoka Marekani, an investor, amekuja akapoteza pesa zake
nchini sasa mpaka tufanye juhudi juu chini tuhakikishe hakuna mgeni atapoteza
pesa hapa kwetu kwa aina hiyo,” added Magu.
The
caretaker of the apartment and security guards present have been questioned as
investigations continue to unravel the prime suspects involved.
According to the police, the two
will be transferred to the Nairobi Central Police Station for further
interrogation and are expected to be arraigned on Monday in Nairobi.
