Meru Senator Murungi Kathuri has been elected as the new Deputy Speaker of the Senate.
During Senate's first sitting on Thursday, Kathuri, who is a member of the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) party, was declared the winner by the newly-elected speaker Amason Kingi.
Kingi noted, prior to the announcement, that Kithuri had no candidate challenging his bid after his fellow contender Steward Madzayo withdrew his candidature on Thursday morning.
The withdrawal therefore rendered Kathuri as the only duly nominated candidate for the position without any ballot or vote required.
Kithuri took oath of office which was administered by Speaker Kingi.
