Ugandan teen who confessed to killing 6-year-old son in Eldoret jailed

An 18-year-old Ugandan national who shocked an Eldoret court after confessing that she murdered her six-year-old son in an attempt to free herself from the burden of taking care of him has been handed a six-year jail sentence.

The young mother, BM, was sentenced by Justice Reuben Nyakundi who declined to give her an option of a fine after she pleaded guilty to the murder charge.

Standing in the dock as she gazed at the judge, the teen mother explained the reason why she acted in the manner she did as members of the public listened in disbelief.

The accused said that she killed her son as she was in deep stress, frustration and agony and wanted to lessen the burden of taking care of the baby alone after his father abdicated his responsibility.

She was defending herself in a case where she is charged with killing her son Junior Nesero Butsetse.

BM is said to have committed the alleged offence on October 28, 2023 at Kabogo area in Uasin Gishu County.

The accused asked the court to give her non-custodial sentence in the event she is found guilty of the murder charge to enable her to get medical treatment for trauma she went through after the horrific incident.

However, the judge turned down the plea and send her to prison.
